La presente investigación analiza el documental «Our Latin Thing»
(Nuestra Cosa Latina) dirigido por Leon Gast y estrenado en la ciudad de Nueva
York durante el año 1972. Este documental es considerado una pieza
fundamental para sustentar el punto de partida y el desarrollo de la música Salsa
en los Estados Unidos.
La investigación se desarrolla bajo un enfoque cualitativo, es de tipo básica
no experimental y utiliza un diseño hermenéutico. El análisis se centra en la
estructura narrativa del relato audiovisual de una pieza cinematográfica para
determinar el mensaje y el sentido de la obra. La categoría de análisis utilizada en
la investigación sobre «Our Latin Thing» es el análisis del mensaje audiovisual.
El trabajo busca caracterizar, mediante el estudio de la narrativa
audiovisual, la forma en que se ha representado la relación entre música Salsa y
el contexto social donde se originó, identificando prácticas culturales que
establecen la tradición cultural salsera a nivel latinoamericano e internacional.
El hallazgo más importante que se ha podido establecer es que el mensaje
audiovisual de «Our Latin Thing» sirve de vehículo comunicacional para la
expresión de la identidad cultural caribeña, en particular, y latinoamericana, en
general, en los Estados Unidos.
