Un problema cada vez más frecuente en el mundo caracterizado por una
alteración en el metabolismo de la glucosa viene ocurriendo constituyéndose
en el evento patológico central del síndrome metabólico y la diabetes
mellitus. Esta alteración del metabolismo tendrá como consecuencia
glicemia elevada usualmente por alteración en la secreción de insulina, o por
no ser efectiva o incluso por alteraciones en los receptores de la insulina.
Como consecuencia de ello, no ocurrirá el ingreso de la glucosa a la célula
manteniéndose elevada en sangre. 1.
El envejecimiento de la población, más actividades con tendencia al
sedentarismo, cambios asociados al estilo de vida y la alimentación con
predominio en azúcares y carbohidratos está incrementando estos
problemas. Por esta razón se pronostica que para el año 2030 habrán 360
millones de personas afectadas lo que además lleva a otros problemas
relacionados por afección de los órganos blanco. 2.
Uno de los aspectos vinculados a este problema es el sobrepeso, el cual
afecta a alrededor de mil millones de personas, siendo un 20% de ellos los
niños. Algunos autores estiman que el próximo quinquenio tendrá 2 mil 300
millones de personas con sobrepeso y 700 millones de personas con
obesidad 3.
